Unbeaten Viktor “The Iceman” Postol (28-0, 12KO) did what no other fighter could do before and that was knock out Lucas “La Maquina” Matthysse (37-4, 34KO) to win the vacant WBC super lightweight title on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. It was a competitive fight early on and a very physical one with plenty of hitting behind the head by each fighter and plenty of grappling. However, by the seventh round, Postol started to pull away by using his superior reach, footwork and handspeed. By the ninth round, Matthysse looked completely frustrated and hopeless but came out strong to start the tenth round. The aggression of Matthysse only opened things up for Postol who was able to connect with a perfectly placed right cross counter to drop Matthysse in a neutral corner late in the round. Matthysse rose to one knee but seemed to elect to stay down and was counted out at 2:58 of the 10th round. By way of knockout victory, the 31-year-old Postol wins his first world title. At the time of the stoppage, Postol was up 86-85 on two cards and Matthysse was up 86-85 on the third card.
