While Victor Postol and Dmytro Kucher, top Ukrainian prospects from the Elite Boxing Promotion’s team, are presently on vacation following their recent fights (a stay-busy win for Postol and a sound upset loss for Kucher), a new breed of Ukrainian prospects was on show yesterday at SportLife club in Kiev, Ukraine.
In the main event, local featherweight Oleg Malinovskiy improved to 9-0, with 2 KOs, following a hard-fought victory over tow-time former Belarussian Olympian Khavazhy Khatsygov. The veteran fighter forced Malinovskiy to take a knee in round one after a huge punch. The prospect beat the count and boxed his way back into the fight, winning every other round handily with a good mixture of pumping jabs and fast combinations. Khatsygov was looking for one big punch but found none and spent too much energy in doing so. He was overwhelmed with Oleg’s activity. Scores were identical across the boards: 78-73 — for the Ukrainian.
Light middleweight Ilya Primak (5-0, 5 KOs) scored his biggest career win, stopping former fringe contender Valentyn Kuts (22-3, 8 KOs) after three complete rounds. Primak was looking for his chances in the first and allowed Kuts to outbox him early on. In round two both fighters engaged into a brawl, and a naturally bigger prospect landed more damaging blows than his opponent. In the third round Primak was examined by a ringside physician. Sensing his cuts and bleeding nose can be a reason for stopping the contest, Primak, 24, increased his punch output and battered Kuts badly enough for him to retire on his stool after the end of the round. Primak made a huge step up in class — his combined opponents’ record was poor 0-2 coming into this fight.
Middleweight Stanislav Skorohod (5-0, 3 KOs) impressed local public with a brutal stoppage of usually durable Valentyn Zbrozhek (4-2-1, 1 KO). Skorohod put his man down with a monstrous right uppercut in round two, then went for the kill, dropped Zbrozhek with a right to the whiskers but failed to get the job done in the second. The end came early in the third stanza after another big right uppercut caught Zbrozhek cold.
Kazakh welterweight up-and-comer Roman Zhailauov (9-0, 7 KOs) did what he should, stopping badly overmatched Artiom Skornyakov (1-2) several times en route to the third round stoppage win.
