Club Sportlife, Kiev, Ukraine — Victor Postol, light welterweight from Kiev, notched his biggest career win and derailed DeMarcus Corley’s amazing comeback with a workmanlike unanimous decision over twelve tactical rounds. Postol, 28, a brilliant stylist with a little-to-no pop in his fists, outboxed the renowned upset artist (and a former champion) in a majority of stanzas with the help of his long lean jab. Postol (20-0, 9 KOs), as always, wasn’t very thrilling to watch but extremely effective with his sound technique. Corley, 38, on the other hand boxed with less fire than usual and didn’t look like the fighter who gave his very all, or his very all was nullified by Postol.

Official scores were: 118-110 (x2) and 117-112 — for the Ukrainian, who retained his WBC International Silver 140lb title for the second time. BoxingScene scored the contest a bit closer: 116-112 — also for the local fighter. Postol is now expected to make a leap up in ranks, as «Chop-Chop» Corley was rated #11 by the WBC and #14 by the WBA coming into this match-up. DeMarcus drops down to 39-20-4, with 23 KOs, suffering his milestone loss and failing to finish strong in what was a real candidate for «Comeback of the year». He previously defeated 18-0 prospect Gabriel Bracero and 23-1 contender Paul McCloskey in 2012. Postol is 4-0, 1 KOs, this year.

Rising cruiserweight power puncher Dmytro Kucher (19-0, 15 KOs), 28, achieved his biggest career success to date. The former amateur standout used the first round of his fight with former WBA interim beltholder Steve Herelius (21-3-1, 12 KOs) to evaluate his experienced opponent. In the second stanza, Kucher immediately went for the kill and soon got what he had been looking for. Kucher landed a painful left hook to the body and forced Herelius to drop his hands, then connected with a big right bomb, which sent the Frenchman down through the ropes and onto the Vringe.com chief editor Igor Vit’ko at ringside. Herelius was unable to beat the count, thus being officially knocked out in the second round. At 36, and after suffering stoppage losses in two back-to-back contests against Yoan Pablo Hernandez and Kucher, Herelius looks to be a shot fighter. Kucher retains his WBC International Silver title in this fight.

Russian super middleweight Marat Kulumbegov, who competes under the aegis of Elite Boxing Promotions and is best known for the reckless style of fighting, improved his record to 8-0-1, 5 KOs, after his opponent Karen Avetisyan (5-5, 2 KOs) failed to get out of the corner for round eight due to a very bad cut. The result was announced as the TKO 8 for Kulumbegov. Avetisyan is much better than his record suggests, lasting the distance with the smash-hitting light heavyweight Sergey Kovalev and being the Russian 175lb champion.
